Mariano Torres Ortiz

Professor of Prehistory in the Department of Prehistory, Ancient History and Archaeology at the Complutense University of Madrid.

Corresponding member of the Royal Academy of History.

His main lines of research have focused on the study of the Tartessian culture, where he has been especially dedicated to the analysis of its funerary manifestations, and its relations with the Phoenician populations settled in the Iberian Peninsula.

He has participated in several research projects, such as La plástica hispano-fenicia en la Península Ibérica (2007-2010) and Forma Hispaniae Prerromanae (2010-2013), directed by prof. Martín Almagro-Gorbea, and El Bronce Final y la Edad del Hierro en el Sureste y el Levante de la Península Ibérica: procesos hacia la urbanización (2014-2017) and Fenicios e indígenas en el Sureste de la Península ibérica: Bronce final y Hierro Antiguo entre el Vinalopó y el Segura, directed by Prof. Alberto Lorrio Alvarado (2017-2021).

He has collaborated in the study of the materials and the publication of the results of the excavations carried out in the Tartessian necropolis of Medellín (Badajoz), the Phoenician site of the Teatro Cómico de Cádiz, the Castle of San Sebastián and the Casa del Obispo (Cádiz), the Phoenician site of La Fonteta (Guardamar del Segura, Alicante).

His publications include the monographs Sociedad y mundo funerario en Tartessos (1999), Tartessos (2002) and, in co-authorship with Prof. Martín Almagro-Gorbea, La escultura fenicia en Hispania (2010).
