José Luis Escacena Carrasco

José Luis Escacena Carrasco is Professor of Prehistory at the University of Seville, where he teaches and researches in the Department of Prehistory and Archaeology. He specializes in Recent Prehistory and Protohistory of the Iberian Peninsula in its relations with the cultures of the Atlantic world and with the Mediterranean civilizations. He has worked in numerous lines of research from the Neolithic to the Iron Age, and especially in the Tartessian and Phoenician world. He can be considered a pioneer in the introduction in Spain of Evolutionary Archaeology, a subject he teaches at the University of Seville and which basically consists of applying the epistemological principles of Darwinian theory to cultural evolution. In the last decade he has also undertaken several studies on symbolism and archaeoastronomy.
