Jaime Alvar Ezquerra

Jaime Alvar Ezquerra is Professor of Ancient History at the Carlos III University of Madrid. He was founder and director of the Institute of Historiography "Julio Caro Baroja" until 2020. He is a corresponding member of the Royal Academy of History and of the Deutsches Archäologisches Institut. He has been founder and director of the journals ARYS and Revista de Historiografía.

He has been visiting professor at the Universities of Franche-Comté (Besançon), London and director of studies at l'École Pratique d'Hautes Études, Section Sciences Religieuses (Paris). He has been a visiting researcher, among others, at the universities of Cambridge, Oxford, Johns Hopkins (Baltimore) and Princeton.

His research interests include Peninsular Protohistory and Tartessus (together with Juan Campos, he coordinated the 1st International Conference on Tartessus: J. Campos and J. Alvar (eds.), Tarteso. El emporio del metal, Córdoba, Almuzara, 2013), as well as the study of religious phenomena (J. Alvar, Romanising Oriental Gods. Myth, Salvation and Ethics in the Cults of Cybele, Isis and Mithras, RGRW 165, Leiden-Boston, E.J. Brill, 2008; J. In 2021 he starts as PI of a 4-year project of the National Research Plan: Religion: the Individual and the Communitas, in which his participation in this conference is framed.
