Carolina López Ruiz

Carolina López-Ruiz holds a degree in Classical Philology from the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid and a PhD from the University of Chicago. She is currently Professor of Classical Studies at Ohio State University (Columbus, Ohio), where she has been lecturing since 2005.

She has published articles and books on the Near Eastern influence on Greek mythology and on cultural contact in the ancient Mediterranean (Colonial Encounters in Ancient Iberia: Greek, Phoenician, and Indigenous Relations, ed. with M. Dietler, 2009, University of Chicago Press). Recently López-Ruiz has co-edited the Oxford Handbook of the Phoenician and Punic Mediterranean (2019, Oxford University Press, with B. R. Doak), and with Sebastián Celestino he has written the monograph Tartessos and the Phoenicians in Iberia (2016, Oxford University Press), published in Spanish by Almuzara as Tarteso y los fenicios de occidente (2020). In his book Phoenicians and the Making of the Mediterranean (Harvard University Press, December 2021) López Ruiz discusses the role of the Phoenicians in the cultural transformations in the Mediterranean in the so-called "Orientalizing Period."
